Causa Justa :: Just Cause builds grassroots power and leadership to create strong, equitable communities. Born through mergers between Black organizations and Latino organizations, we build bridges of solidarity between working class communities. Through rights-based services, policy campaigns, civic engagement, and direct action, we improve conditions in our neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, and contribute to building the larger multi-racial, multi-generational movement needed for fundamental change.
We are hiring for a full-time Tenant Counselor/Organizer who is fluent in Spanish & English to join the newly formed Housing, Land & Development team to provide counseling services (in Spanish and English) to low-income tenants through our Tenant Rights Clinics, as well as organize working-class tenants in San Francisco to help build a stronger movement for housing rights for all.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
Provide tenant rights counseling and case management, including maintaining and providing necessary follow-up with tenants using a Serve the People/rights-based model
Participate in the creation, implementation, and facilitation of Know Your Rights workshops for tenants
Recruit members into the organization through neighborhood outreach, Know Your Rights workshops, and more
Support with member retention and leadership development work,
Participate and support member participation and leadership in civic engagement (electoral) activities
Secure member participation (turnout) to member meetings, mobilizations, or other events through phonebanking and other member communications
Support with the development of member meeting agendas and program content, as well as provide logistical support, and attend team and organizational member meetings
Support movement building work by participating in a coalition/alliance representing the organization
Raise funds for the organization by participating in seasonal fundraising activities
Support with policy work and campaigns as they come up and assist with the implementation of related activities
Support the successful planning and implementation of team and organizational events, meetings, and other activities
Support members with interpretation at organizational meetings, as well as help translate documents from one language to the other as needed
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
Strong commitment to social, gender, racial and economic justice
At least one year of experience doing basebuilding, community organizing with low-income communities of color - or 2 years of experience providing direct service work to the same community
Knowledge of issues related to tenants’ rights and the housing crisis in San Francisco, Oakland, and the Bay Area region
Familiarity with local history, geography of the city/neighborhoods, knowledge of various community organizations, political issues, lay of the land, etc.
Strong personal organization, experience with workplanning and time management skills
Experience using mac computers, including familiarity with gmail, google calendar, google drive and databases
Experience with translation and interpretation in Spanish and English
Position requires traveling between our San Francisco and Oakland offices
Hiring Details
The position is full time, non-exempt. Candidate must be able to work some evenings and weekends.
Full time salary for entry-level experience starting at $45K.
